Cutting woven roving for the transom. I will be doing a separate spread on fiberglassing at some point. For now, I will just offer these tips: measure your old transom before you remove it. Write it down. Your new transom, including both fiberglass and wood, must be exactly the same width. I found that you can add layers of fiberglass mat between each layer of plywood (I even added a second layer of roving between the second and third layers of wood) without a problem, so long as you tightly bolt and clamp the layers while they cure. I suggest that you do as I did and put in the first two layers of wood and glass and then take a measurement. You can use thicker or thinner wood on the third layer to get the width to come out right. Also, remember that old transom beam? You can use it as a template for cutting out your fiberglass. Make your fiberglass 3 inches bigger than the template (on the sides and bottom only) so that it can wrap around onto the bottom and sides of the hull.
